Thursday and Friday October 19-20

The last two days we've been practicing using the microscope and using proper sketching techniques to sketch what we see.  We've looked at microbes in pond water.  Students took the time to sketch and describe what they saw.  Below is an example of how to draw sketches in your lab book and examples of microbes we identified:

Daphnia

Ostrecod

Paramecium

Nematode

Copepod (Cyclops)

Wednesday October 18

After bellwork we took time to complete our sketches for the Virtual Pond dip.  Please see yesterday's blog for more information.

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Today we began our "Virtual Pond Dip".  Students took time to draw 8 different microbes that will likely be found in our pond water samples in Friday's lab.  Students can get the worksheet in class.

October 16, 2017

Today we completed a lab that we began on Friday.  Students have been practicing using the microscopes.  We expect all students to be able to know the microscope parts as well as what the parts do.  We also expect students to be able to focus under low, medium, and high power.
We also took notes on how to make proper sketches.  Please label your next clean page "Tips for better drawings" and copy the blue writing.

Today we completed a diagram of the parts of a microscope. Students who were absent need to pick up the worksheet tomorrow in class.

We then took the time to complete setting up our notebook for cells.  After the cover page, we left the next 2 full pages for bellwork.  After the bellwork, we left one page for our Cells word bank.
After the word bank , students should make the following Light bulb page, and I can... page.

Wednesday October 11

Today we took our LDA.  We will take the same test towards the end of the year.  This is a set of questions that cover material we will be covering.  Students did not need to study.  This is NOT a grade.  The information is only for the teacher and administration as a way to show learning throughout the year.

We also took the time to set up the cell unit in our notebooks.  Below are instructions.

Tuesday October 3

We did an activity that demonstrated how easily a viral disease can spread through a population. We read an article that explained how viruses and germs can be spread through tiny water droplets that shoot out of our mouths and noses when we sneeze and cough.  Students were given a "bodily fluid" to share with 3 other students.  One student had a sample that was spiked with a "virus".

Today we are learning about the immune system.  Those who were absent need to look over the linked Power Point presentation.  There is a "fill in the blank" note sheet that is posted on our class web site.  Please click here for the notes.  If for some reason the link won't work, please go to our class website under the "resources" tab.  Then, click on Cell Biology and Disease.  The power point and link are near the bottom of the screen.
