January 29 (Review)
Today we took time to review the concept of density and apply that to why convection currents occur in the asthenosphere. Students had to complete a review worksheet. Below is the bell work and the notes. There is also a picture of the review worksheet.

Density and Convection
As we learn about density, remember that there are some factors, like temperature, that can affect the density of matter.
Convection currents in the asthenosphere occur as the semi-solid rock nearer the core heats up. The increase in thermal (heat) energy causes more motion in the molecules. As the molecules spread out the density of the semi-solid rock becomes less and the material rises. As the material reaches the bottom of the lithosphere, it cools, becomes more dense and sinks.
As long as we maintain the temperature differences between the inner parts of the Earth and the crust, this cycle will continue.
The following link shows convection currents in water as one side of the tank is heated while the other side of the tank is cooled. Click HERE for video link

January 24 Earth's Layers Notes
Today we took notes on Layers of the Earth. Please see the notes below. We will also be filling in a detailed diagram of the Earth's layers. The diagram is posted below the notes.
January 23 Earth Layers Model
Today students made a 2D model of the Earth. We will use this model as we work through our information on each layer. Please see the information slides below.

Wednesday January 22 (Earth's Layers)
Today students took time to answer the bell work, then they read about Earth's Layers. The reading is posted below the instruction slide. The students answered questions on goformative.com. Students are allowed to resubmit the assignment. Your goal is to get all the answers to the questions correct.
Next, go to Brainpop.com (log in through Clever, then sign in with Google) and watch the video on Earth's structure. There is a quiz to take for a participation grade

Tuesday January 21 Layers of Earth
Today we used a video showing the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's to show the importance of knowing what is inside our Earth and how that knowledge helps us understand the processes that shape the surface. Below is our bell work question and the link to the video.
