Monday September 30

To we took a formative over cell parts.  Students should log in to GoFormative and take the formative titled "Cell Parts/ Pro and Eukaryote".  Be sure to go back in to your submitted test to see what you missed and what the correct answer is.
We also took time to complete a cell review.  The answers are posted below.  I have also posted an activity where we compared how a city works to how a cell works.  The pictures are titled "Cell City Analogy".   Lastly I posted the pictures and explanations for our Egg Demonstration.

Cell Parts Review Quizlet LINK

Cell City Analogy
(read the paragraph and find the cell part that matches the underlined city part)

Egg Demonstration
This was used to provide evidence that the cell membrane does allow things to move into and out of the cell.

Day 2 (egg in vinegar; shell dissolved and egg swelled)

Day 3 (egg in karo syrup; water moved out of cell and cell shrank; notice there is more liquid in the cup)

Day 4 (egg in pure water; water moved into cell and cell swelled; notice that there is less water in the cup)

Friday September 27

Today we built a plant cell.  See the notes below.

We only labeled the 3 unique parts of a plant cell.  A complete plant cell is shown below.

Wednesday/ Thursday September 25-26

Today we started to piece together a paper cell.  As students learn what each cell part looks like, we also label the cell part with an analogy (something we recognize that has a similar job).  Students will glue the cell and cell parts in their notebooks and label each piece.

Tuesday September 24

Today we watched an introductory video that shows the structures and functions of organelles within the cell.  A link to the video is posted below.  Students then titled the next page in their notebook a "Cell Notes" and write the following definitions.  The last bit of class was used to complete their cell organelle functions worksheet.  The answer key is also posted below.

Monday September 23

Students took and LDA which is a test we use as evidence of learning throughout the year.  It is a test that is scored but NOT entered into the grade book.  After, students used the time to continue matching cell parts to their functions.  Correct answers were written on a worksheet.  The answer key is below.

Cell organelle/function matching activity

1. With your team place the cell terms on one side and the definitions on the other.

2. Without looking up the words attempt to match the cards based on what you already know.
Don’t worry about getting it wrong…
3. Follow this link to the virtual cell website LINK.
4. Click on the animal or plant cell.
5. Read about each part and use the information to try and match the cards correctly.
6. Come up and get a key to check your answers when you finish.

Thursday September 19

Students took time to compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.  Make the following chart in your notebook, then use the notes to fill in each column.

Wednesday September 18

After our test on Characteristics of Living Things students took time to use video links to learn about Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic organisms.

Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic

Use the following videos to answer the question on your Webquest.

1. Log in using your Google account when you click on the video.
2. Play the "What is a Cell" video and answer the questions under the heading.
3. For the Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic video, you must use the download button to watch each video. Click download and play it from your computer.

Tuesday September 17

Today we reviewed for our Characterics of Living Things test.  Below is a quizlet review link.

Quizlet Review Characteristics of Living Things

Thursday, September 12, 2019

Thursday September 12

Alive (once living) or Not?

Students were asked to discuss, in their groups, what classifies something as living.  They were then given 6 items and asked to determine if they thought the object was Alive or Not?  They had to cite 2 pieces of evidence for their reasoning.  This was completed in their notebooks.  After discussion we revealed six characteristics all living things share and students were asked to reevaluate their decisions and justifications.

Wednesday September 11

Today we tested over the following standards:
SEPS.2:  Developing and using models and tools (we studied how to use the microscope to collect and record data)
7.LS.1a:  I can investigate and observe cells in living things (we studied scientists who developed the cell theory;  we will continue to cover this standard more fully in the next couple of weeks)

Wednesday September 4

Today students completed a lab in which they practiced using the microscopes to focus the image of a specimen.  They also practiced good sketching techniques.  The microscope lab is due tomorrow.  There will be a formative on microscope parts.

Here is a link to a quizlet for the Microscope Parts and Cell Theory Scientists.
