Thursday & Friday February 22-23 Volcano Notes

Volcanoes
Students cut and pasted a foldable into their notebooks to help organize their volcano notes.  A picture of the foldable is shown below.  The notes are also posted.  Students will use the notes to fill in the foldable.  The first slide of notes regarding magma types should be written on the back or to the side of the foldable.

Mapping Volcanic and Earthquake Activity:

Yesterday we had a guest speaker.  He spoke about what causes earthquakes, effects of earthquakes, earthquake safety, and why we have the chance of having a major earthquake here in Indiana.
Today we took time to plot the locations of  volcanic and earthquake activity around the world.  The coordinates for the locations are shown below.  Students answered questions regarding the relationship between volcanic activity and tectonic plate boundaries.  Pictures of the worksheets are posted below.  If students finish their work early they should access the interactive links below.

Plate Boundaries Interactive  Click on the link and read through the information.  At the end of the page you will see a Plate Boundaries challenge.  Try the challenge!

February 19-20 Plate Tectonics Review

These next two days we have been reviewing our content on Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift.  Students have watched videos, taken notes, built models, and completed homework over these topics.  Please review previous blogs for details.  Below are the quizlets and a brief review of our information.  I have also posted an answer key for our written review.

Friday, Monday and Tuesday February 7- 12 Plate Tectonics

Over the next few days students are learning how our knowledge of the ocean floor helped us move from the idea of Continental Drift to the theory of Plate Tectonics.  The first 3 slides are reviewing Continental Drift.  Slides 5 -11 are notes to copy into your notebook.  Copy everything in blue on the Plate Tectonic notes.  Be sure to watch the video links as well!

Thursday February 6 Plate Tectonics

We reviewed Continental Drift by adding the notes below to our notebooks.  There is a review video posted below.  We then watched a video on Seafloor spreading.  This discovery was the information Alfred Wegener needed to show HOW continents could move.  Please watch the video link.
We also began a reading with questions over Plate Tectonics.  This will need to be picked up in class.

Wednesday February 5 Continental Drift continued

Today we reviewed the evidence to support Continental Drift.  For the bell work we asked the students to watch the following video.  Pick out 5 things you see that could be based on truth.  Some answers are listed on the bell work slide below.

Ice Age: Continental Drift video clip

Next, please read the slide below, then watch the video to review the evidence that suggested continents have moved.  We then answered a worksheet in class that reviewed even more evidence for Continental drift.  If you are absent, please come see me in homeroom for the questions.

Tuesday February 4 Continental Puzzle continued....

Today we finished the "Continent Puzzle" activity.  Yesterday's blog shows how students used land shape, fossil and rock evidence to put all Earth's land masses into one large land mass.  Today is a continuation of that lesson.  Students should see that scientists have gathered evidence to suggest that Earth's land has vastly changed over millions of years.  In fact, 230 million years ago Earth's land was joined in one super continent, Pangea.

Monday February 3 Evidence for movement of continents

Today students used puzzle pieces, rock and fossil evidence to understand why scientists think that continents have moved over time.
