Today we are finishing up learning the microscope parts and how to focus an image.  We will also cover how to properly draw and label your image.  Below is our bellwork and the notes we covered.  We used a "fill in the blank" note page that we glued into our notebooks.  There is also a sample of the lab.

Thursday August 29

Today students took a formative on the Cell Theory.  If you were absent you should go to GoFormative and look for the formative titled "Cell Theory & Scientists."  After taking the formative go back into your submitted test and check what you missed being sure to find the correct answer.
Next we reviewed parts of the microscope and discussed how to properly focus the microscope.  Please watch the following video link and review the note slide on "Parts of the Microscope"
You can pick up the worksheet we completed when you return to class.

Tuesday/ Wednesday August 27-28

Student's are learning about the scientists who contributed to the Cell Theory.  Each group researched the 5 scientists within their groups, then, as a class, we covered the main contributions of each scientist.  They should title the next clean page in their notebooks with "Cell Theory".  The parts of the notes that are highlighted and *starred are to be written in their notes.
Here is a link to a quizlet as well.

Monday August 26

Today student's worked on completing a shared Google Slide presentation on scientists who contributed to the Cell Theory.  Students were given 5 scientists.  Each person within the group is responsible for researching at least one or possibly two scientists.  The group needs to have research on all 5 scientists by tomorrow!  Instructions for how to format the slide and what research they need is shown below.  You can also click on the quizlet link or click on the Cell Theory Video Link for information!

Friday August 23

Today students shared a Google Slide presentation with their group.  Each group is responsible for creating a shared presentation on the five scientists listed.  This presentation will cover facts about the scientists who contributed in some way to the Cell Theory.  Each student will contribute to the presentation by covering facts about one or two scientists.  Students will divide up the scientists among themselves and will be given instructions about what information they need for each scientist.  A picture of the instructions and how to title the presentation are posted below.

Thursday August 22

Today we took time to set up our notebooks.  Students created a cover page that had pictures or words that related to Cells.  Examples of cover pages are shown below.  I have also posted how to set up the other pages of your notebook.  Please follow these instructions...

Create a cover page.  Use pictures that relate to "Cells"

On the following page write our "I can..." statements.

On the next page make 3 columns and label them as shown.  Fill in at least two things for the "what I know" and "what I want to know" columns.

On the next 2 pages (front and back) write the word "Bellwork" at the top.

Here are other great cover page ideas!!!

QUIZLET LINK SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Today we took notes over the Scientific Method.  The notes are pictured below.  Students may also use the quizlet link above to practice the terms and steps associated with the Scientific Method!

If the picture is blank, here is a typed copy of the notes!
Step 1: State the problem as a question
Step 2: Research the problem
Step 3: Form a hypothesis  an educated guess (If, then, because)
Step 4: Create procedures to test your hypothesis
Step 5: Perform experiment  (Control your variables)
Step 6: Observe and record all results
Step 7: Interpret the data
Step 8: Conclusion  (Communicate results:  I think this means...)

Wednesday August 14

Today was a continuation of our Paper Rocket lab from yesterday.  Students made a paper rocket and measured its average flight distance.  They were then challenged to make one change to the rocket that would help improve its flight distance.  Please see the two previous blogs for more details

Tuesday August 13

Today we completed the first part of our "Paper Rocket" lab.  We will use this lab to explain how scientists use good experimentation procedures to investigate and solve problems.  Below are the slides we covered in class.  You can watch the video on how to design the rocket on yesterday's blog.

Paper Rockets:
We are still continuing to collect lab fee ($5), the signed parent letter, and the signed lab safety contract.  Today we also began an activity in which students worked in groups to make a paper rocket.  Students learned group expectations.   Please watch the video by clicking the link below for instructions.
